I am the artist
Statement
My most recent work is a study in the relationships of color mainly. Op art (Optical art) from the 1960’s was intriguing to me in that the works can create an illusion using colors of the same value next to one another and causes the eye to be tricked in to appearing that it has a vibrating quality to it. Although my work would not be considered to be Op art, I do draw from it, rich chromatic color with close values of other colors to create the same type of intensity.
My figurative work borders on fantasy rather than realism. This leaves open the use of rich color and surreal landscape as a background. I will use warmer colors in the background and cooler colors in the foreground just to defy the notion that warm colors come forward and cool colors recede.
In my more abstract works I use pin wheels and its parts as individual platforms to make the design of the painting. Much of it is drawn with oil pigment sticks on top of a painted surface. My subject matter is derived from “String Theory” which is a controversial and more recent explanation of the beginnings of the universe like the well-known Big Bang theory. These works depict objects traveling through space at a molecular level and put in motion with vibrating vortices called strings that are the elements to define String Theory in the piece. I depict the objects as either singular, clustering or colliding together. The strings are represented by short abrupt squiggles or marks reminiscent of shorthand writing giving the objects and the space around them energy. My intention is to let the viewer observe an energetic and spatial yet colorful design, representing a model or theoretical view of the universe.
